Mentorship Tutoring
Sail to Success aboard the Mentorship
Hello! My name is Jake, and I'm the beating-heart behind Mentorship Tutoring, where our mission is to revolutionize the way science is taught and learned. My journey into the scientific world was fueled by a deep-seated passion for problem solving; a passion that was not just about conquering challenges, but about using these skills to make a tangible difference in the world.
Early Beginnings
My path into science began to take shape at South Brunswick High School, where as a founding member and Captain of the robotics team 750W, I first experienced the thrill of applying science and engineering in competitive settings. This period was crucial in nurturing my curiosity and teaching me the value of teamwork and innovation.
Expanding Horizons
During my high school education, I took on the role of a STEAM camp instructor and curriculum designer at STEAM Works Studio. This early foray into science education was transformative, equipping me with the skills to engage diverse groups of students and ignite their interest in learning. It was here that I learned the importance of making science accessible and exciting, laying the groundwork for my educational philosophy.
Academic Pursuits
This foundation of curiosity and engagement with science education led me to Muhlenberg College, where I pursued and earned my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. My time at Muhlenberg was marked by a rich blend of rigorous academics, mentorship and my first opportunity as a peer tutor, where I discovered the profound impact of personalized learning and one on one engagement with experts. This approach not only propelled my academic development but also deeply influenced my approach to teaching.
Professional Development
My commitment to exploring the scientific world further led me to complete two internships at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, where my research skills were honed. My role as a Senior Research Technician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center further deepened my understanding of scientific inquiry, teaching me to examine problems from multiple perspectives and contributing significantly to my effectiveness as a tutor.
Chasing a Dream
Now, as I embark on a PhD in Immunology at The University of Pennsylvania, my aspirations are twofold: to push the boundaries of scientific discovery and to redefine science education. My goal is not just to impart knowledge but to foster understanding—the kind that lights up a student’s eyes when they grasp the “why” behind the “what.”
Philosophy on Education
My philosophy as a tutor is a direct reflection of my educational journey—shaped by the personalized mentorship I received and my experiences in diverse learning environments. I am committed to guiding students through their own journey of discovery, helping them to understand concepts at a fundamental level and to see the larger context of their learning.
At Mentorship Tutoring, we're dedicated to sparking those moments of insight for every student, tailoring our approach to meet their unique needs and unlock their full potential, one discovery at a time.
